We met with Patrick in May to explore the support systems that we could offer; he was cooperative and interested in working with us. In June he was invited to a rugby game with another youth and an unmatched mentor. By halftime, Patrick and the mentor were in deep conversation about music and its influence. When the game ended they went to grab a bite to eat. By the end of the night Patrick requested to be matched with the mentor! Match made!
Since that time, Patrick has been very involved in our programs and attends every workshop possible. As Patrick loves science and chemistry, for his Birthday StepStones sent him a hand-made card with a pass to the Ontario Science Center. Patrick was so grateful and appreciative, as he had not received anything for his birthday nor had anyone else wished him a happy birthday.
Over the summer, he was enrolled in a mechanics program for youth, a program teaching the functions and dynamics of a mechanics shop. Between summer school, the mechanics program, and StepStones workshops, he was well distracted from the negative influences in his life. He mentioned that he no longer desired to experiment with marijuana and “doesn’t remember the last time he had plans during the summer”.
